for a Full-duplex Bu er Insertion Ring Local Area Network RAHUL SIMHA1 Dept. of Computer Science College of William & Mary Williamsburg, VA 23185 YORAM OFEK IBM Research Division TJ Watson Research Center Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 Abstract Of several existing designs for Local Area Networks, the Bu er Insertion Ring has been shown to provide higher throughputs, lower mean delays and greater spatial reuse than competing designs such as the Token Ring and Slotted Ring networks. However, one disadvantage is that the normally unregulated access scheme of the Insertion Ring allows for the phenomenon of \starvation" when a network node has to wait too long before it can access the ring. In our work, we demonstrate that starvation is a serious problem and present a protocol to prevent it. It is shown that the new protocol is correct, stable and does not substantially degrade the otherwise e cient operation of the ring.

Performance Improvement of Expanded Integrated Local Area Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)

In Local Area Networks (LAN) connected together by bridges, flow control and smooth traffic in the network is very important. However, congestion at bridges can cause intensive loss of received frames. In addition, the received frames are thrown away and have to be retransmitted by the source station, which causes more congestion and massive reduction in the overall network throughput. The netw...

Interference Aware Full-Duplex MAC Protocols Design and Evaluation for the Next WLANs

Recently the in-band full-duplex in wireless communication has evolved into a mature technology since the self-interference cancellation technique is able to support fullduplex capability. Moreover, some researchers focus on the full-duplex media access control (MAC) protocol design for wireless local area networks (WLANs). However, it is assumed that all the node have full-duplex capability in...

Metaring - A Full-Duplex Ring With Fairness and Spatial Reuse

We describe the design principles of a ring network with spatial bandwidth reuse. Our goal is to provide the same functions of existing LAN/MAN designs that do not permit spatial reuse and concurrent transmission. A distributed fairness mechanism for this architecture, which uses low latency hardware control signals, is presented. The basic fairness mechanism can be extended for implementing mu...

CARRING II: A Reliable Real-Time Network

The paper introduces CARRING II, a further developmentof the CARRING communication network. CARRING is a reliable, ring-based, real-time Local Area Network (LAN). It was developed to connect e.g. mechatronic systems in cars, but it is also applicable to general LANs. The proposed network tries to solve the known problems of LANs with bus topology, e.g. limited scalability or limited reliability...

I - MAC : A fair access protocol for passive asynchronous optical ring networks

Two major problems in a passive asynchronous optical ring network using CSMA/CA protocol are bandwidth fragmentation due to packet insertion process and unfair bandwidth access due to ring topology, which strongly drop the network performance. We introduce in this paper a CSMA/CA-based protocol with fairness improvement, (the so-called I-MAC for Improved Media Access Control), applied to passiv...
